How can countries secure an additional Champions League berth for the upcoming season?

Each country’s league is assigned a coefficient ranking based on the performance of its teams in UEFA’s three men’s club competitions: the Champions League, the Europa League, and the Conference League.

Coefficient points are awarded based on match outcomes—two points for a win and one point for a draw.

The total points accumulated by clubs from the same domestic league are summed and then divided by the number of teams participating in European competitions.

For instance, if the Premier League accumulates 100 points, this would be divided by the number of teams competing in Europe (seven), resulting in an England coefficient of 14.28.

This season, extra points are available to clubs competing in the Champions League, which benefits leagues with a higher number of participating clubs, such as Germany and Italy.

The top two countries in the coefficient rankings earn an additional Champions League berth for the following season.

These spots are allocated to the teams finishing immediately below the standard Champions League qualifying positions in those leagues.

In the Premier League, the top four clubs automatically qualify for the Champions League based on their league position, meaning any additional berth would be granted to the team finishing fifth.

For the 2024-25 Champions League, Bologna and Borussia Dortmund, who placed fifth in Serie A and the Bundesliga respectively, were awarded these additional spots.
