Mateta ‘recovering well’ after receiving 25 stitches in his ear following a ‘careless challenge’

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta assured he is “doing well” despite being hospitalized after a head kick from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

A visibly emotional Steve Parish, chairman of Crystal Palace, told BBC Sport that Roberts had “endangered a fellow professional and maybe his life.”

Roberts was sent off in the eighth minute of Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie following a VAR review, which showed him kicking the side of Mateta’s head while rushing off his line to clear the ball.

The 27-year-old French forward received treatment on the pitch, was given oxygen, and was then taken to an ambulance. Substitute Eddie Nketiah came on and later scored in Palace’s 3-1 victory.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner described the foul as one that “could have been the end of JP’s career,” while Millwall boss Alex Neil maintained that Roberts had no intention of injuring Mateta.

On Saturday, Mateta reassured fans on social media, saying, “I’m doing well. I hope to be back very soon and stronger than ever. Well done guys for the great job today.”

Later that night, Palace confirmed that Mateta had been discharged from the hospital.

“He received specialist treatment and 25 stitches for a severe laceration to his left ear,” the club stated. “All scans were clear, and JP is feeling well.”
